In the fall of 1958, we, as eighth graders, crossed over to portals of Ironton High School.
We were proud, finally, to be a part of the school which for seven years we had looked forward to attending. We were greeted by loud shouts of “Look at the peanuts!
Throughout the first month, we found ourselves lost, bewildered, and just plain scared. The teachers were wonderful in helping us about the building, but we were still “peanuts” to the older students.
We found that the auditorium contained a “peanut gallery” and, naturally, who else would sit in a “peanut gallery” except for “peanuts”? Our class sat in the gallery for two years because the Ironton Junior High School had been completed in our freshman year and the eighth-graders went to the Junior High.
Upon becoming freshmen, we were thrilled at the opportunity of voting for our officers and various other things. Now that we are sophomores, we have only two more years of our high school days left. The most of us will endeavor to uphold the standards of our school and pattern our lives by the excellent example of citizenship we have been taught in Ironton High School.
